The Nativity

Before the stars in space were spun

Ere life on earth had first begun

The Word with God, was God, and made

All things, his majesty displayed

The lightsome Word then took on flesh

In Mary’s virgin womb made fresh

We saw this Light, his grace and truth

The Son of David, Son of Ruth

The darkness could not comprehend

What could the Light-made-flesh intend

The darkness could not snuff it out

The Light shed light displacing doubt

This Light for all who would receive

Was life for those who would believe

New life, new birth as children free

Are born into God’s family

And Mary rose to bless the Lord

As yet she did not know a sword

Would pierce her heart and make it bleed

For in her womb the Holy Seed

The Prince of Life, her baby boy

Would slay the tomb and death destroy

The Lord would cast the proud ones down

And raise the poor to wear the crown

But Joseph could not bear the thought

His bride with child shame on him brought

So secretly he had in mind

Hush-hush divorce would be most kind

But in a dream an angel said

Take Mary as your wife, get wed

God’s Spirit has conceived this child

So mankind can be reconciled

And so it was in David’s town

The Lord himself to earth came down

Jesus was born in stranger’s byre

Rough shepherds saw an angel choir

When eight days passed the parents brought

The holy Babe to temple court

To sacrifice before the Lord

Two doves was all they could afford

Then Simeon and Anna praised

And blessed the Lord for in their days

God’s rescue plan had been revealed

And every nation would be healed

Then Magi drawn by star most bold

Brought frankincense and myrrh and gold

But Herod sent his killing men

To slay the boys of Bethlehem

Joseph from his dreams awoke

Get up and flee! The angel spoke

Get up and take your wife and child

To safety down beyond the Nile

The refugees to Egypt fled

While Herod’s hands with blood turned red

So Joseph, Mary, Jesus found

In Egypt rescue, safe and sound
