The Harrowing of Hell

Now while the earth in darkness toiled

And Jesus’ friends in grief recoiled

When all seemed lost and Life had died

The Prince of Life the grave defied

For heaven’s Darling tore through hell

And rent its gates. Oh, who can tell?

The Son in glory flashed his sword

The saving Lamb, now Lion roared

The hosts of hell were put to flight

The demons trembled at the sight

They had not reckoned that their prey

Would leave their house in disarray

That day he broke the fangs of death

And slew foul tomb with his sweet breath

And for his praise, the Father raised The Son who won, his battle done Upon the third before the dawn He rose to life, from death firstborn An angel came to roll the stone The women came but he was gone

John and Peter checked it out The grave was empty, not a doubt

As Mary stood and wept a while

He called her name in his own style

She cried with joy, fell at his feet

The first the Risen One to greet

This message now to Peter take

Let’s meet up north beside the lake

That evening on the desert road His hands to two disciples showed And to the lads who met in fear He bade them look and touch, draw near

Now Thomas wasn’t there that night

Would not believe without clear sight

Unless his scars I see and feel It can’t be true, it can’t be real

A week went by, he came again

Showed Thomas all his marks of pain

“My Lord, my God!” the sceptic cried Released his doubt, put down his pride
