The Faith of a Foreigner

A Roman captain demonstrated faith that was so remarkable that Jesus expressed surprise!

The Jewish people were adept

At taunting Romans who then kept

Them powerless in sad lament

By brutal scourge and punishment

So, many eyebrows then were raised

When Jewish leaders came and praised

A Roman captain who had paid

Their synagogue’s foundation laid

His servant was at point of death

They feared he drew his final breath

Lord, come and heal this good man’s slave

So Jesus went this slave to save

The Roman sent another word

And Jesus marvelled when he heard

Just speak, your order will suffice

To save my precious servant’s life

Such faith, said Jesus, is quite rare

In Israel no-one can compare

When people come from west and east

To dine with Abr’am at the feast

The ticket in is not by race

But faith in God’s amazing grace

So go, my friend, your slave is healed

Your faith will be to you a shield
