Prayer, Posterity and Prosperity

And Jesus taught them how to pray

And gave them words like this to say

Our Father, who in heaven dwells

Your glorious name with honour swells

Upon the earth your kingdom come

Just as in heaven, your will be done

Give us today our daily bread

Forgive the sins we’ve done and said

Forgive us too each evil thought

As we forgive just as you taught

And from temptation give us peace

And from the tempter’s grip release

The Kingdom and the power yours

Your glory all creation roars!

So, ask and seek and knock until

You find your Father’s perfect will

And find a quiet place to praise

Away from prying human gaze

Your Father who in secret sees

Will listen to your private pleas

Don’t praise yourself before God’s throne

But ask your Saviour to atone

And plead for God’s redeeming grace

To cleanse from sin in every trace

They asked him to provide a sign

To prove his was a power divine

The prophet Jonah’s sign I give

Three days in death and then I’ll live

And mark my words those Ninevites

Repented, put their house to rights

Don’t miss the point of what I say

Turn to the Lord, repent and pray!

The Pharisees did not agree

Consumed by their hypocrisy

Their holiness a complex mask

To keep their laws was quite some task

Then Jesus called down seven woes

Put them to shame, such Holy Joes!

As leaven rises in the dough

Their murder plans began to grow

They hate me and they will hate you

Before the courts stand straight and true

And when they charge you with a crime

Do not forget that you are mine

My Spirit will provide the words

Just tell them what you saw and heard

No fear, no shame, no guilt, no blame

Hold fast my name and you shall reign

A fight between two brothers flared

A legacy was undeclared

But Jesus would not legislate

I will not judge or arbitrate

But take some time to ponder, stop

A rich man had a bumper crop

He had no room these goods to store

What can I do to hold some more?

Tear down my barns and build new ones

And rest in peace with tons and tons

Of wine and grain and all things good

This rich fool had not understood

That every good and perfect gift

Is from the Lord who plans to sift

The wheat from chaff and this his ploy

To bring the harvest home with joy

He gained the world but lost his soul

For him the death knell bell would toll

Into the sovereign threshing floor

His soul was gathered and his store

Of goods passed to his progeny

Who shared their father’s destiny

Beware, take care to shun all greed

To have enough is all you need
