A man called Levi gathered tax
A traitor worthy of attacks
Sold out to Rome, despised by all
But Jesus came to pay a call
Come follow me and leave your stall
So Levi rose and threw a ball
His friends were not respectable
But Jesus was un-shockable
The fourth commandment for our rest
For Pharisees a litmus test
And so when Jesus healed a man
Upon the Sabbath they began
To question Jesus, but the crowd
Was praising God with voices loud
Such teaching with authority
Is quite unlike a Pharisee
These comments tended to displease
The Pharisees and Sadducees
Who plotted how to put to death
The Prince of Life. Their ears were deaf
They could not hear his words of grace
They wanted to protect their place
Their pride and jealousy aflame
They plotted murder to their shame
Upon a lofty mountainside
He called his team and catechised
Blessed are the humble poor
The kingdom’s theirs for evermore
Blessed are the ones who grieve
Their broken hearts God will relieve
Blessed are the meek of heart
The earth is theirs, complete not part
Blessed are the ones who yearn
For righteousness is their concern
Blessed are the merciful
They shall find mercy bountiful
Blessed are the pure in heart
They shall see God when they depart
Blessed are the ones who stopped
The fighting, God will them adopt
Blessed are the ones in pain
Who suffer for my holy name
Blessed are the ones reviled
Just like the prophets, my dear child
You are the salt, you are the light
Dispel the darkness, shine so bright
That everyone will see your deeds
Give glory to the God who leads
You out of darkness, out of shame
Into the truth, that’s why I came
But when you fast or pray or give
In secret is the way to live
The heart is where you incubate
The seeds of sin which generate
The evil acts the law berates
So guard your heart from greed and hate
And pray your Father, who is just
Will keep your soul from fear and lust
And lead you in his righteous ways
To God Most High be endless praise
The ones who listen to my words
And do not leave them to the birds
To swoop on down and steal the grain
Nor let the sun like burning flame
Destroy the harvest or what’s worse
Allow the weeds to choke God’s verse
But build their lives, the godly wise,
Upon the rock which storms defies
